PSC Ep. 74: In what order do I add winterizing chemicals?

In today’s episode of Poolside Chat, Rob and Matt tackle another common swimming pool question:
I recently purchased a winterizing chemical kit for my pool. In what order do I add the chemicals?

Now, if you get a winterizing kit from Inyo, in that kit, you will receive a pool shock, a metal sequestrant, and some winterizing algaecide. Now, go ahead and take the entire answer from me.

Okay, will do. The first thing you want to do before you start adding the chemicals is to balance the pH. You want to get your pH within a range of 7.4 to 7.6. Test it and add your pH up or pH minus. Once it’s balanced, the first chemical you want to add is the rust and scale preventer. You’ll add that to the pool and then wait about 30 minutes, let it circulate, and then you can shock the pool. Then what you want to do is run the pool overnight, and then the next morning, you can add the winter algaecide. From there, you can proceed with the rest of your closing. I think that’s the rest of it.

  1. We have help coming to put winter cover on but found out they can’t come for 3 weeks. We have lowered the water level, turned off the pump. Should we add closing kit chemicals now or wait until ready to cover

    1. I would wait until you are actually closing the pool. And, if your weather is above 60 degrees, I would put some water in the pool so you can run the pump. If you leave the water stagnant and unchlorinated for 3 weeks, you are going to have a very green and dirty pool.
